December's Guest Blog with 'The Idle Man'

This month we are offering you a guest post from Men’s style specialists The Idle Man who shares our values of Britishness and craftsmanship. In this post they will let you know what you need to wear to look sharp this festive season – we’ll raise a glass of British Royale to that!

News from www.theidleman.com - Ah, black tie events, the chance to feel like James Bond and celebrate your achievements with your friends and colleagues. Sounds like a dream right? So you're the lucky fella who's received an invite to the party, congratulations. It can always be rather troublesome figuring out what to wear, but not to worry because we’ve rounded up our favourite picks on what to wear to a black-tie event.

Tuxedo

Black tie social events are generally a lot more formal than your average office shindig, so it’s time to spruce it up. I recommend investing in the infamous tuxedo this is different to your usual suit jacket as the lapel (the long collar on the jacket) tends to have a subtly different texture and colour, you should be opting for black or dark navy to keep it crisp. The buttoning detail will also be different but will for sure have you looking swanky as ever.

Double breasted dinner jacket
The double-breasted jacket is a rare sight, it’s not unusual to see them at black tie events at all but if you have the physique to pull it off I would definitely suggest doing so. The double-breasted jacket creates a fine finish with two columns of detailed buttons, it creates a sophisticated exterior to match the event. Coming in a vast range of colours, styles and patterns there's a dinner jacket out there for everyone. Again I opt for dark colours for an enduring approach if you’re looking to stand out opt for a subtle pattern.

The dress shirt
I would always recommend sticking to a white shirt and avoid any loud colours. A white shirt is perfect for contrasting and complimenting your suit, I suggest an oxford shirt. Make sure to iron it first to get rid of any creases. You wouldn't want to ruin your suit with an unironed shirt now, would you? If you choose to wear a bow tie with your suit I would propose picking a dress shirt with a wingtip collar, this allows the majority of the bow tie to show. A normal oxford shirt would suit perfectly if you’re choosing to wear a tie.

The shoes
To top off your eccentric look, go for a classic and traditional look. Shine your shoes and put on your favourite oxford brogues or derby shoes. Not only are they comfortable but will make your outfit look pristine. It’s important you maintain your shoes, scruffy shoes can definitely cause an impact on your outfit.

Now we’ve gone through all that, it’s time to piece your clothing together. Grab your formal oxford shirt and some slim fitted smart trousers (or relaxed, depending on your choice). Pair with smart derby shoes and a tuxedo for an elegant look. Don't forget to fit with a bow tie for the 007 look. If any man can look great in a suit it’s you. You’re only as confident as you make it – so make your own style.
